Room types, keys, and stream codes
Audience
Use this page if you create, support, or invite people to VDO Sessions.
Outcome
You will know which room type to choose and which link, key, or code each participant needs.
Steps
- Choose Editorial for browser-friendly review, collaboration, chat, drawing, and participant controls.
- Choose Colour for higher bitrate colour review and native player workflows. Colour rooms are peer-to-peer first for the primary media path when available, so plan the Streamer-to-Player path like a direct site-to-site link.
- Use the room key when connecting VDO Streamer or a native VDO Player app.
- Use the share link for browser viewers.
- Use stream codes for native quick connect. Colour playback uses a player code. Editorial passive viewing uses a viewer code.
- Regenerate a stream code when an old native player code should stop working, then send the new code only to the intended reviewer.
Expected result
Everyone receives the right access path: browser viewers get the share link, Streamer gets the room key, and native players get the room key plus the correct stream code. For Colour rooms, the main quality path is the direct peer path when available, so the two sites need enough bandwidth and stable routing.
Common failures
A browser viewer was sent only a stream code. Send the share link instead.
A native player has the room key but no stream code. Send both values.
The code role is wrong. Use player for Colour playback and viewer for Editorial viewing.
The stream is not active yet. Start publishing from VDO Streamer before testing playback.
