Linux displays and monitor workflows
Display routes depend on the published host/client builds, compositor, monitor topology and permissions. VDO implements up to two desktop display routes on supported paths; this does not qualify every monitor combination.
Check the supported desktop
Use x86_64 Rocky 8/9 GNOME/GDM X11 or Fedora 43/44 GNOME/GDM Wayland. Fedora retains normal host capture consent.
Connect to a ready host and verify live picture and pointer alignment on the primary display. On Rocky X11, read-only geometry checks include:
xrandr --listmonitors
xrandr --current
On Fedora, use normal GNOME display settings and the advertised routes. Do not use X11 utilities to alter a Wayland compositor or change GDM to bypass consent.
Multiple monitors and headless hosts
Test each required display, scale, resolution, route change and reconnect on the physical setup. Mixed-resolution or virtual monitors are not automatically qualified. The earlier four-distro 0.18.11 VM readiness/reboot checks were not repeated for 0.18.12 and are not physical multi-monitor acceptance.
Do not assume the installer creates NVIDIA virtual displays or that a dummy plug guarantees capture. Review GPU, driver, compositor, output and client together before changing a headless host. Never restart GDM, change topology or enable automatic login while another operator is working.
