Getting Started with VDO: Real-Time Video Collaboration for Post-Production
Why VDO?
Post-production teams have long struggled with the limitations of traditional review workflows. Sending compressed files back and forth, scheduling in-person sessions, and dealing with unreliable screen-sharing tools all add friction to the creative process.
VDO changes this by providing real-time, colour-accurate video streaming purpose-built for editorial and colour grading workflows.
Sub-100ms Latency
Unlike consumer streaming platforms that buffer seconds of video, VDO delivers frames in under 100 milliseconds. This means your remote collaborators see cuts, transitions, and colour changes as they happen -- not seconds later.
Browser-Based Playback
Viewers join a session by clicking a link. No downloads, no plugins, no accounts required. The player runs entirely in the browser using modern web technologies.
Native macOS Encoding
Our Streamer app runs natively on macOS, leveraging hardware-accelerated encoding via VideoToolbox. Stream directly from DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, or any application on your desktop.
Colour Accuracy
For colour-critical work, VDO supports reference display synchronisation. When a colourist makes an adjustment, every viewer in the room sees the same image -- no guessing about gamma curves or colour spaces.
How It Works
- Download the Streamer -- Install the native macOS app from vdostream.io/downloads
- Create a Room -- Set up a collaborative or colour room from your dashboard
- Share the Link -- Send the room URL to your team or clients
- Stream -- Start streaming from the Streamer app; viewers watch in real-time in their browser
Use Cases
- Editorial reviews with directors and producers across time zones
- Colour grading sessions where the colourist streams while clients watch remotely
- VFX reviews with frame-accurate playback for shot approvals
- Dailies distributed to stakeholders without compressing and uploading files
